Hair Loss
What is hair loss?
Your hair loss may be abnormal if you are losing more than 100 strands of hair a day. This may result in the general thinning of hair or patchy loss of hair over the scalp and other hair-bearing areas, such as the beard or eyebrows.
What are the types of hair loss?
Hair loss can be divided into scarring or non-scarring forms of hair loss. We can also classify them according to whether it is localised on generalised. Different types of hair loss have different causes.
What causes hair loss?
Androgenetic Alopecia
This is the most common cause of hair loss in both men and women. It is commonly known as male or female pattern baldness. Factors contributing to androgenetic alopecia include genetics, increasing age, and androgens (male hormones).

Alopecia areata
This usually results in patchy areas of hair loss, but occasionally, diffuse or total hair loss may occur. It is due to the body’s own immune cells attacking hair follicles resulting in hair loss.

Telogen Effluvium
Diffuse loss of hair which may occur 2 to 4 months following pregnancy, high fever, acute illness, physical and emotional stress, or crash dieting. Cancer treatment can also cause a similar form of hair loss called anagen effluvium. This form of hair loss is generally reversible.

How common is hair loss?
Almost all of us will experience some form of hair loss sometime in our life. In some people, it may manifest as transient hair loss known as telogen effluvium after acute physical or emotional stress. Androgenetic alopecia, the most common form of hair loss, can be seen in more than 50% of men above 50 years of age.
How is hair loss diagnosed?
Hair loss can usually be diagnosed through detailed history taking and clinical examination. In some patients, skin tests and blood tests may be necessary to determine the cause of hair loss.
What are the treatment options for hair loss?
The treatment of hair loss will depend on its cause. For example, alopecia areata is usually treated with injections into the skin and topical medication. Androgenetic alopecia in men is commonly treated with oral finasteride and topical minoxidil.
