Fractional Laser Resurfacing
What is fractional carbon dioxide laser?
Fractional carbon dioxide (CO2) laser is a form of skin resurfacing commonly used to treat acne scars and rejuvenate ageing skin. In this procedure, the laser is used to puncture multiple, tiny channels into the skin, while leaving islands of intact skin in between the puncture holes. The laser energy delivered into these channels help to remodel the collagen, improving the appearance of scars and wrinkles. The intervening normal skin helps to speed up the healing process and reduce the risk of side effects and complications from fractional carbon dioxide laser treatment.
What conditions can the fractional carbon dioxide laser treat?
- Scars, including acne scars, traumatic scars, surgical scars
- Keloids
- Wrinkles and mild skin laxity
- Enlarged pores
- Some benign skin growths
What can I expect on the day of treatment?
The treatment area is thoroughly cleansed prior to the laser. A topical anaesthetic cream is usually applied for 30-60 minutes prior to the procedure. This helps to take away the pain during the procedure. The laser treatment is usually quick and completed within 10-15minutes.
Following treatment, there can be a transient burning sensation which resolves after 15-20minutes. Soothing creams will be applied immediately after treatment to enhance the results and reduce discomfort.
Does the fractional carbon dioxide laser have any downtime?
Following treatment, the treated area will be intensely red with fine scabbing. For treatment over the face, this gives an appearance of a severe sunburn. The scabs usually fall off after approximately 5 to 7 days and the redness slowly recovers over 1 to 2 weeks.
It is important to take care of the treated area during recovery. Use a gentle cleanser for washing during this period and apply the creams prescribed. It is also important to avoid sun exposure during this 2 weeks to prevent the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is darkening of the skin that arises following injury or inflammation of the skin.
