What causes generalised itch?

There are many causes of itch. The most common causes are skin diseases. These diseases include urticarial (hives), atopic eczema, and psoriasis. Sometimes, internal diseases, such as kidney failure, liver failure, and thyroid problems, can cause a generalised itch.

Why is it important not to scratch the itch?

Scratching causes injury to the skin which releases chemicals that worsens the itch. This leads to the worsening of the skin condition. Skin damage can lead to superimposed skin infection, darkening thickening and scarring of the skin. It is therefore important to break the itch-scratch cycle.

What can I do to reduce the itch?

Here are some practical measures you can adopt to help reduce the itch.
  1. Recognise and avoid things that can aggravate the itch
