What are some common types of skin surgery performed in children?
Some skin lesions that are commonly excised in children include benign skin tumours, cysts and moles. Sometimes skin biopsies may be necessary to confirm the diagnosis of a rash.
Does my child need sedation or general anaesthesia for the surgery?
Most simple skin surgery can be performed under local anaesthesia. This is administered through injection at the site of the lesion. A topical anaesthetic cream can be applied prior to the injection to improve the comfort level.
How do I prepare my child for the surgery?

- Shower and wash hair before coming for the surgery
- Bring along a favourite toy, or electronic device such as a mobile tablet to keep your child
- Have a light meal before coming down for the procedure
What happens on the day of the surgery?
A topical anaesthetic may be applied prior to the administration of the local anaesthetic. One parent can accompany the child during the procedure to alleviate anxiety. If the procedure is on the body or limbs, the child can continue watching the electronic device during the procedure. The whole process is usually completed within 20 to 30 minutes.
