Moles are usually harmless, unless it begins to change over time, indicating the presence of an underlying health condition such as cancer. Whether it be for medical purposes or aesthetic reasons, many choose to have the moles removed.
Some commonly recommended treatment options include:
  • Surgery
  • Laser treatment

Does my child need to have his/her moles checked by a dermatologist?

Most children do not need to have their moles checked regularly as moles in children are usually harmless. Sometimes, a child may need to see a dermatologist for a skin examination. Some possible reasons include
  • Children with large congenital moles should have their moles checked regularly.
  • Children with multiple moles (more than 50) or a family history of melanoma
  • Children with a changing mole, or bleeding or non-healing lesion
  • If a new mole is irregular or contains different colours
  • Children with genetic conditions that predispose them to a higher risk of skin cancers
  • Children who have had another childhood cancer

What happens during a mole check for my child?

A parent can accompany young children during their skin examination. Before the examination, a consultation will be performed during which parents can highlight any lesion or mole that they may be worried about. Risk factors are also assessed.
All parts of the skin including the scalp are examined during the mole check. An instrument called dermatoscopy is usually used to examine the moles in greater detail.
If this is your first mole check, counselling on how to reduce the risk of skin cancer in future is also carried out.
